Hi, all:

We are two couples who will be doing our first Eurail trip for 23 days in September (1st class Global Pass).  We will be based in Oslo, Vienna and Bern for the most part but will take many day trips on trains from those cities.  We obviously would like to sit together, e.g. two seats here and two seats there.  When reservations are not required, should we get them if they are available and if we don’t get them or they are not available on a certain train, what are the chances of not getting a seat or being able to sit together; or, my biggest nightmare, having to stand in the aisle for the whole trip.  And a related question:  what is the easiest way to find out if a train has optional reservations?  I don’t think the European Rail Timetable shows this.

We will be very grateful for any responses you can provide.

1st class is pretty much always empty, even more outside summer.

Seat reservations are a complete waste of money in Switzerland, they're not a thing here. They're free of charge in Austria and in many other countries through tickets.oebb.at : add Eurail as a discount and select one-way tickets. Also free of charge in Norway on entur.no, do not make them through eurail.com

Seat reservations are never possible on regional trains.

Don't worry too much frankly and enjoy your trip :)

Hello, It would be ideal to have seat reservation. You can book through OBB website which is really good.

On the OBB website, it shows whether a seat reservation is required or not. You can find through it.

Hope it helps and enjoy your upcoming trip :)
