I am trying to look at trips from Salzburg to Prague in December and Eurail messages say they are waiting for an update from railway and to check back. Is this typical behavior? I get no results so cannot even see the routes and times. Anyone have any experience with this?

The start of December (2nd Sunday, I think) is when a lot of significant changes are introduced into different countries timetables. The new (modified) timetables for the period after the changes are often not available until quite close to the time they are implemented. This is what you are seeing.
If you are trying to plan a route then it can be helpful to check the times for the first week in December or the last week in November to get *an idea* of your options.
Quite often the new timings will be same as the old ones, or may differ by only a short period that won’t materially impact your plans.
Sometimes though . . . the changes are significant, so on only use them to get a rough idea of your options until nearer the time.
One example . . . I planned on getting the Nightjet from Paris to Vienna in January a few years ago. When I looked it ran on (I think) Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. This was perfect since I would get to Paris on Saturday and get to Austria on Sunday morning, ready to start a weeks ski holiday. Unfortunately that year they changed the operating days to Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
