Seat bookings in various EU trains

So I have to make some seat reservations as for some of the trains, its mandatory. What if I book a seat and I miss the train on the day, would I have to book another seat for myself or would I be given another seat in another train? The hard part of my travel is that the schedule is not fixed even though the route is fixed, which makes things complicated for me.

If you miss a train with mandatory reservations because of a delay or cancellation, then always speak with staff. They should rebook you free of charge. If reservations on the next train are not mandatory, then you can just take it. If you have time, you can be rebooked free of charge; if not, you can request a refund of the reservation.

If you miss a train because you were late yourself, then it depends. You usually need to book a new reservation, but sometimes you can do an exchange or get a refund until a short time after departure time, e.g. with SNCF.
