Seat reservation confusion: Budapest-Kelenföld to Wien Hbf

I am planning to visit Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Hungary in September with a 7-day Eurail Pass.

I'm planning to take a train from Budapest-Kelenfold to Wien Hbf with a Eurail Pass.

On the Eurail website, it says that a seat reservation is required, but when I checked on the EuroCity website, it shows that reservations are not necessary and I wasn't able to book a seat there. On the Eurail site, I can still make a reservation. Should I book a seat in advance, or is it fine to travel without

one?

What's the "Eurocity website”? Eurocity isn't an operator, it's a train category.

Anyway, you shouldn't use Rail Europe or the Rail Planner app to plan. Neither is very reliable or a good planner. The reference is always the operator(s), which in this case is MÁV and ÖBB, and they say reservations are optional for international journeys.

Please note that this EC train comes from Budapest Keleti (dep. 5:40) and is attached to the night train from Bucharest. Reservations are €3 on tickets.oebb.at

Th oe EC346, ÖBB classifies it not as EC, but as D346, is night train coming from Bucharest with mandatory seat reservation according to the ÖBB travel planner. For the daytime  ÖBB trains seat reservation is not mandatory but possible. You can do it for 3€ on the ÖBB site and also on the MAV site. The Czech company regiojet runs a few trains Budapest-Vienna-Prague (I do not know if the call in Kelenföld). For these sea treservations are required.
