For which train exactly (route, departure time) do you need a reservation?

Please keep in mind that:

  • Reservations are optional in Germany.
  • For the ICE/TGVs from France to Germany, reservations are optional from the first stop in Germany (usually Karlsruhe or Saarbrücken), so you only need to book until that stop.
  • It is possible that DB and SNCF have separate quota for the trans France-Germany, so please check both www.raileurope.com (uses SNCF) and bahn.com (DB) if there's a seat. For DB, please follow the link (the homepage won't give you pass reservations) and do NOT check "Seat only”.
  • The best way to book is for both of you together, so you'll see automatically whether there are enough seats. Also it's best to ignore interrail for reservation, but to use this page instead:

You need to mention the departure time and route. There are no direct trains between Paris and Hamburg. Where did you buy the reservations?
