May I get seat reservations on journeys that do not require them? For example, I have gotten tickets with my Eurail pass for Malmo to Oslo for 9-10-25, 10:12 to 17:44.  And if I can do seat reservations, will the Eurail discount apply?  Same question for Nice to Genoa?

Please keep in mind that your Eurail pass is your ticket. "tickets with my Eurail pass” doesn't make sense: you don't need any other tickets for trains included in the pass. You may need or want reservations. The best places to book reservations are listed here, including instructions for booking with a pass:

Most trains don't have reservations, so you can just board and find a free seat.

Some trains have mandatory reservations.

If reservations are optional, then it's your choice.

Malmö to Oslo doesn't need reservations. Only one carriage can be booked anyway; the others are free seating. Nice to Gerona needs at least one change and trains will either have mandatory reservations or no reservations at all, depending on which ones you take.

Hello Thomas!

If the journey does not require mandatory seat reservations feel free not to do so(I would not do it either). Same for the Nice to Genoa situation.

Hope this helps!

I would definitely like to make seat reservations for both those journeys. We have 1st class tickets for both the Malmo to Oslo and for Nice to Genoa journeys. But our whole point of the trip to Europe is to view Europe from the train--not just for transportation. We'd hate to just have to stand or not sit together.

I followed your link and don’t see how to book seat reservations.  … I am so deeply appreciative of any help. Thank-you, thank-you!

The link doesn't book any reservations, it gives you information about where to make reservations. You need to carefully read the information about the countries where you want to travel and then follow the advice.

Seat reservations are not possible on the route you have chosen between Malmö and Oslo. Öresundståg and VY train don't have reservations.

Also on most trains between Nice and Genova, reservations can't be made.

As noted above, you will find that some trains in Europe (look for identifiers like R or RE for regional or regional express) don’t have bookable seats.  This is typically a function of them being relatively local trains.  Think of it like a bus between cities - you can book a ticket but you just get on and sit wherever there’s a seat.  If there’s no seat, then (by virtue of being a regional train) there’s a good chance that someone will be getting off at the next stop and freeing up a seat.

Since you have a 1st class ticket you are a lot less likely to have problems with getting seats - because of the price differential there will always be more people in 2nd class carriages than in 1st class.

For my Malmo to Oslo journey, I broke it up into the two legs and was able to get first class reservations on the Malmo to Gothenburg leg.

The SJ trains between Malmö and Göteborg have mandatory seat reservations. Öresundståg on the same route have no reservations.

There is no first class on that train, but with a 1st class pass, you can get a reservation free of charge, in the one carriage that has reservations.
