I an travelling through Germany, Austria, France and Belgium during December. I have a first class global pass. Wondering if you would recommend purchasing seat reservations, even when not compulsory, at this time ?

In 1st class you should always find a seat.

Mostly depends on the route honestly. For example the Vienna - Germany ICEs are tiny and really popular. People end up standing all year round. Same thing for Cologne - Brussels/Amsterdam.

On the other hand Basel - Germany ICEs have hundreds of seats. Not an issue.

Between Christmas and New Year trains are also pretty busy as everyone's going home to see family.

Most long distance trains in France and between France and neighbouring countries are reservation mandatory.

Except for international trains there are no reservations in Belgium.
