I’m planning to travel to Sicily in june and want to take the night train back from Siracusa to Milan on june 24. However, when looking for availability on raileurope or italiarail, thay can't sell me a reservation for this train on that day. When going to the Trenitalia website, it shows that the train is running, bus not being bookable. Does anyone know why this might be the case? Engineering works?

On the dates before and after june 24 the train is bookable, but only couchettes, sleepers are not available. This is the case for the whole of june and a large part of may. It seems that may 14 is the last day for which a sleeper compartment can be bought. Are these completely axed from the Milan - Sicily route during the summer?

Trenitalia is contractually obliged to operate the night trains, including the sleeper accommodation, so I suppose there's just a delay in opening the reservations.

On Italiarail it it now possible to book the sleeper accommodation, but only as far as Piacenza (last stop before Milan). Could I get into trouble if I book it until Piacenza and stay on board until Milan? The price is the same.

That shouldn't be a problem. Nobody checks tickets in the morning and the price of the reservation will be the same. However, I doubt the booking will succeed, since Trenitalia don't show the train as bookable, not even to Piacenza.

I am looking for a reservation from Rome to Palermo at 21 June, but no night train to Sicily seems available yet from 15 June. So I guess Trenitalia is really late. It's not known when booking for the summer timetable might could open?

Nobody knows. The Sicily night trains are often the last ones to open reservations and there's no other way than to keep trying.

Just tried to book Siracusa - Piacenza with Italiarail, and it sort of worked? I got an e-mail that my order is still being processed, but it is not yet confirmed. Let's see what happens next.

Good to hear that others seem to have the same problem. It's not just the night trains it seems, EC150 (Milan - Frankfurt) is not bookable on some days as well

This might be related to engineering works in Germany. It is often the first one to be cancelled when there's limited capacity. Travel date?

Luckily plenty of options on that route.

Ciao, Remco van Poelgeest!

ItaliaRail was unable to confirm the reservations for your recent order.

Your credit card has not been charged.

It was worth a try, but as expected, Italiarail can't book it either.

I just read this on the ferrovie.it forum:

Nel mentre, nel silenzio piú totale la sezione siracusa degli ICN sa Roma e Milano ha perso la vettura Letti.

Which translates to: Meanwhile, in the total silence, the Syracuse section of the ICN knows Rome and Milan lost the sleeping cars.

That would mean only couchettes on the syracuse part of the train. If you want to travel in al sleeper car you have to take the Palermo section.

Almost all night trains are online and bookable since a few weeks, except the one I want to take. Does anyone know what is the case with the icn 1962 on june 24?

The one I wanted to take on June 21 is available since a few days, but because it took so long I was unsure if it would run, so I changed my itinerary. You can try to wait a few more days, maybe tickets will be available then. But that's just a guess.

Tickets will become available, but it can take a while. That is a regular occurrence for Italian night trains.
