Hi,

I want to book the sleeper from Cerbere to Paris in August, for me, my husband and my son. On Seat 61, he says that if you want the whole compartment to yourself you can add and pay for phantom children. I just wanted to check - is it really ok to do this? I’ve had a look at booking on trainline (without using the interrail pass) and I can’t seem to find the option to just book the whole compartment (because there’s only 3 of us I think?) so I’m considering booking the non-existent kids! So my questions are:

  • Can I book WITH the pass and add phantom children (or can I not do this because the ‘phantom children’ won’t have a pass?
  • Or should I just book without the pass and add the phantom children??

I’ve promised my son a sleeper train at some point in the holiday otherwise I would maybe avoid it!

Thanks everyone :-)

You should be able to find the “espace privatif” fare on the official SNCF website: sncf-connect.com. As you have seen, you can’t use this offer with a pass.

However I’m not sure if you are able to make “phantom bookings” when using a pass to fill up your compartment as AFAIK all online channels which sell pass reservations for France require a pass number at checkout.

As long as you don’t show/mention the phantom bookings, you should be fine IMO. But I have no experience on that topic.

Personally, I would go for the espace privatif option but maybe someone knows a possibility to end up cheaper.

Hope this helps :).

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply - really appreciate it :-)

I’m not sure what you mean when you say ‘As long as you don’t show/mention the phantom bookings’ sorry - could you expand?!

Thanks!

Given that you were able to add phantom children to your pass reservation, you may have got separate reservations (separate pages on your PDF) for each one traveling (real and phantom). So you only print/show the reservations which are “real”.

But as I said above, I’ve no experience in booking multiple people on a night train in France. I used french night trains only as a solo traveler in a shared compartment.

Hi, yes that makes sense - there is actually a separate page on the pdf for each ‘person’ on the booking so yes I can hopefully only show the real people! Thanks so much for your help :-)
