Having seen how difficult it is to get to Lisbon from Madrid has anybody tried Madrid  to Seville then 3 hrs bus ride to Faro?

Regular trains then to Lisbon take about 3hrs.

I´ve done it once the other way with many more changes and a short ferry ride over the border=river and walk to busstation and then again walk bus-train in Huelva. But I think by now one cannot even do that anymore, and the new bridge/motorway does indeed shorten it a lot. Just check how the bus/train stations are located- I think in SVL quite a distance apart. But there is a metro now too.

Seems frequency of buses varies a lot with season

All in all same nr of changes=2 as all the way by train via Badajoz-Elvas-Entroncamento, plus that I just read in trade-press that on PT side they are recasting the timetable and maijng it a whopping 2!! links/day.

You can take a bus from Sevilla or Huelva to Portugal. Then pick up trains in Vila Real de Santa Antonio or Faro. Check train times on cp.pt. You need reservations for the fast trains. These can’t be done online, but are easy at the station.
