I’m planning to go from France to Switzerland, is it possible to sit faster route but not paying for the reservation fee.

There are some routes where you have no reservation fees eg: Lyon to Geneva, Mulhouse to Basel, Strasbourg to Basel.

I assume these are all regional trains as any TGV service has mandatory reservations.

Yes, I don’t know where @Lee ting yi wants to start and end, but these three routes all have TERs, which don’t need reservations.
