Help! Our train broke down on the way to Ventimiglia and we have missed our connection to Nice - we’ve missed the last train as we are 3 hours late due to being stranded on the train. There are no busses and we are travelling with young kids.
will there be any assistance with payment for a taxi? It seems the only way we can get to Nice tonight and it will be too late to try to find a hotel.
Talk with train staff as soon as possible and ask them what you should do to get assistance. If you're already in Ventimiglia, find any railway staff and ask them for assistance.
They are required to organise alternative transport or overnight accommodation, without you having to pay. Also, if you have a flexipass and would need to continue travel tomorrow instead of today, they'll have to give you a free ticket so you don't need to use an extra travel day.
If you don't get any assistance and/or are forced to pay anything yourself, keep all receipts and request reimbursement from the operator you're currently using (Trenitalia?).
Applicable is Regulation 1371/2007, in particular articles 16 and 18.
