Trains without reservations

Hi. Does anyone know, if I’m traveling on trains which don’t need reservations, do I have to catch the train at the time specified in my trip details? e.g. if I say I’m going to catch the 09:30 but I miss it, can I just hop on the next one?

The train you take and the train on your pass need to be the same.  But . . . I would rephrase your question from “do I have to catch the train at the time specified in my trip details?” to “does my trip have to have an entry for the train that I take?”

The answers to both questions are “yes”, but they mean different things.  If you have an 09:30 train entered into your pass and while sitting on the platform notice there’s a suitable 09:15 train you can take instead then the solution is to take the 09:15 and adjust your pass.  The 09:30 entry in your pass is just no longer used or relevant.

Or, in your example above, maybe the 09:45 has a dining car and you want to get some breakfast on your trip.  No worries.  Just don’t get on the 09:30, enter the 09:45 in your pass and get on the train.  and enjoy breakfast.

It needs to be the exact train.

In this situation, I tend to add several possible options, then just slide the toggle on whichever one I end up taking.

You can even edit your Trip after you’ve boarded, if you quickly jumped on a train and forgot to select the correct one. I frequently do this when plans change (ie I decide to jump off a train early, or change trains at a different station).

In very frequent trains, such as an S-bahn, getting the exact train may be impractical. I have always assumed that there is leeway in those situations.
