travelling without a seat reservation

I know that similar questions have been asked, but I am still confused. If I want to travel on a train that does not require a seat reservation do I just rock up on the day and show my global pass?

That’s exactly how it works.
Before departure you do have to toggle the trip and activate your travel day if you have a flex pass.

Yes.  No reservation required (and similarly no reservation possible, like a commuter train) means anyone with a valid ticket can get on.  Your pass is a valid ticket, so you can get on.

As per Dagi above, you have to actually have the trip activated on your pass in order to have a valid ticket.

Ok, thank you. and what if I miss that train/change my mind - can I just schedule and activate another trip on the same day?

Exactly.  If you miss or just don’t take a train you have entered in your pass nothing happens.  You just enter the new one and get on that train.

You should toggle the “missed” one off and delete it as in practice it’s not a train that you took on your pass.

@SarahV

If you have a reservation you must also toggle the trip and activate your travel day, otherwise the reservation only is not valid for travel.
