Hello dear Community,

We're traveling on July 19th/20th, 2025 from Switzerland via Munich - Hamburg - Copenhagen to Oslo.

We've already booked our train seats with DB up to Copenhagen.

  • Here's a question: Is a 21-minute transfer time in Hamburg enough for us? If the DB timetable information is correct, our train from Munich arrives on the same platform (06:42) from which the train to Copenhagen departs (07:03) (Platform 11). Is that possible? Would you recommend reserving the next train from Hamburg at 08:50 AM?

What worries me a bit more is that DB shows "seats fully booked" for the Copenhagen - Lund connection. On SJ.se, our desired train from Lund is marked "Preliminary"! I can find the connection on all timetables, whether it's DB, SBB, or the Railplanner App.

When will it be definitively confirmed that this train will run?

Thank you for your knowledge, greetings Yasmin

Looking at the stats of your train on https://www.zugfinder.net/de/zug-ICE_1080, I’d book a later train to Copenhagen and enjoy a breakfast in Hamburg if the train should be on time. However you should talk to staff if your train is delayed and you miss your connection anyway.

Most of the Copenhagen - Lund trains are operated by Öresundstag and run frequently. Reservations not possible. Just find a free seat. Which exact train would you like to take there?

Thank you very much.

Do you also know about the train from Gothenburg to Oslo?

The train before, which we can't catch under any circumstances, is running.

The train after that is also running. We would have to take that one if we didn't leave Hamburg until 8:50 AM, but we wouldn't arrive in Oslo until around midnight.

We would like to take the IC 396, which leaves Gothenburg at 6:13 PM, but according to the SJ travel planner, it's not running (yet).

Do you have any experience with that?

Thank you.

Hmm, keep checking until the train is confirmed, there are some engineering works on the line which give some uncertainty.

The Oslo Gothenburg-train doesn’t require reservations so you shouldn’t worry. You should get there eventually, even if it’s almost midnight.

Very long travel day though, what’s your exact route?

I guess it’s Switzerland-Münich, Munich-Hamburg by night train, Hamburg-Copenhagen, Copenhagen-Lund-Göteborg, then Göteborg-Oslo?

That is very, very, very train heavy. More than 24 h on trains or in transit. That’s a bit much even for the experienced train travellers and train nerds helping you here. That’s much for a first time interrail, too much. And you don’t have that much buffer time in total it seems.

Strong recommendation to split it up somewhere along the line. Maybe stay in Copenhagen, Malmö or Göteborg (or any place between those, Sweden is slighlty cheaper than staying in Copenhagen)?

It’ll be much more relaxed that way in stead of pushing all the way through to Oslo on a tight schedule.

It will be a very long travel day anyway. Don’t expect to get much sleep in the ICE between Munich and Hamburg.

The train between Göteborg and Oslo is running according to Entur.no (the official Norwegian trip planner). It already starts in Malmö at 15:34 and stops in Lund at 15.49.

As long as you want to go straight to Oslo the same day, I therefore suggest to do the following:

EC 398: Hamburg - Copenhagen, 8:50 - 14:03 (reservation required, better punctuality than the ICE form Munich)

Öresundstag: Copenhagen - Lund: 14:30 - 15:22 (no reservation needed)

Vy IC 396: Lund C - Oslo S: 15:49 - 21:44 (no reservation needed)

Hope these information help :)

@BrendanDB

Thank you for your support, we will keep an eye on it and hope to achieve our desired result.

We can't leave before July 19th. We want to meet up with the grandparents on the 21st, who will still be in Oslo, before their travel plans continue towards Narvik.

Hence the very ambitious schedule.

In Munich we have 2.5 hours for dinner, in Hamburg we have a sporty 21 minutes or a leisurely 2 hours

Will we get any sleep on the train? Not really for us parents; the teenagers can sleep anywhere.

The rest of the itinerary will be more leisurely, with plenty of room for spontaneous changes.

@eurocity101

Thanks for your support! I've noted your route from Copenhagen and hope to find it in the Railplaner app.

What about connections that the Railplaner app doesn't have? Are manually entered routes included in the Interrail pass? We have mobile passes.

We parents will hardly sleep on the train, the main thing is that the teenagers get some sleep.

I suggest that you make a free reservation on the VY396 in the VY app. It gives you the right to travel with the train in case the train would be very full. It doesn't give you access to a specific seat.

Yes, always add trains manually if you don’t find them in the planner. All trains mentioned are included.

Does that only work in the Vy app? I didn't see a way to book reservations on vy.no.

It works in the Swedish VY app.

I'm concerned that Vy 396 isn't showing up in the Rail Planner app. I booked our seats directly through the Vy app. How do I link this reservation with my digital Interrail Pass if the connection isn't visible in the Rail Planner app? Thanks for your help!

*****

You don't link reservations to your pass. They're separate. You just need to add the train to your trip in the app; if it doesn't show up, then you can always add it manually.

Vy 396 is in the Rail Planner app from Göteborg, but not (yet?) from Malmö. It just means that the Rail Planner app data is out of date. Maybe there will be an app update before you travel, and if not, just add the train manually.
