Weird problem with Austrian Railways

Hi, I want to do an Interrail reservation on the sleeper (EN414) from Ljubljana to Stuttgart in mid/late March, but most dates say “Currently not reservable” (it’s the same with or without an Interrail pass). However, it *is* possible to get a reservation on the same train starting from Zagreb!!

  • Do Austrian Railways prioritise passengers doing the ‘whole trip’ from Zagreb to Stuttgart, before releasing seats/berths from intermediate stations, maybe just a few days before? Seems crazy when the price is the same!!
  • If I book a reservation departing from Zagreb, but only board at Ljubljana, will my reservation be invalid and get thrown off the train?

Thanks for any assistance.

It could well be that the train will be diverted and will not call at Ljubljana, and that the timetable is not final yet. In that case, you can connect with it, e.g. in Celje. The fact that a reservation from Sevnica is possible but not from Zidani Most strongly points in the direction of a diversion via Celje and Graz.

I'd book from Sevnica.

Thanks very much @rvdborgt ! Yes it does say that there could be railway engineering works.

If I book from Sevnica, do you know if I have to catch the train from Sevnica? If the timetable is finalised later, and the train *does* finally pass on its normal route through Ljubljana, and I board at Ljubljana, would the inspector tell me that my ticket was not valid, do you know?

Thanks very much @rvdborgt ! Yes it’s possible, there is a warning about railway engineering works.

Do you know, if I book a reservation from Sevnica, and then a week before the train OBB confirm that it is going to travel on the original route through Ljubljana, would I be able to board at Ljubljana, or will my reservation be invalid?

Thanks again.

Your reservation is valid. There's a small chance however that your place is sold to a spontaneous passenger who didn't book in advance.
