I booked Carcassonne to Zurich through rail planner and the reservations.  I had a hotel that I couldn't cancel in Zurich.

The SNCF train was late on first part, but SNCF cannot help as the tickets weren't booked by the Rail Planner App as one journey.

Has anyone foubfmd a solution.  It looks like I'll lose the reservations for trains i can't now make today and the hotel.  The activities I had booked on Zurich may also be lost. Total cost £250+.  Has anyone had any luck with claiming a rebate.  The ticket office in Toulouse (en route)  saud SNCF wll find me a hotel.  This now doesn't look true.

Please post the exact trains you were supposed to take and where you are now.

If you can’t change your reservations, you’ll be able to get a refund for the ones you couldn’t use.

SNCF or Interrail should cover a replacement hotel if you can’t reach Zurich, though you may need to pay yourself and claim it back.

You won’t be able to claim the cost of missed activities in Zurich. Maybe your travel insurance will cover it.

SNCF must help you to rebook your reservations. They are obliged to assist, regardless of where you booked, and free of charge. If you are stranded, they must provide overnight accommodation.,

If they refuse, let them book any reservations you need for your new journey and claim back the extra costs from Interrail.

My question to SNCF would always be: What do you propose? And the answer cannot be that you have to sort it out yourself. They must help you, it's the law.

We weren't stranded, unfortunately.   The planned 4 hour first class train arriving at 9pm turned into and all night journey of 4 small provincial trains, 1 bus replacement and 1 tram throughbthe night to 8am.  The nights sleep lost was the worst bit with a 13 year old son.  Its not the end of the world,  of course

I lost 4 reservations and a 25 euro taxi journey and 120 euro hotel.

SNCF Did pay for one reservation for the rescheduled trip. And we made the activities the next day, albeit a bit sleepy.

I don't want to whine, I'm just curious if interrail or SNCF Sid be interested in compensation.

You should get €24pp compensation for being > 2 hours late, plus a refund for the unused reservations. You can claim here https://www.interrail.com/en/support/delay-compensation

I don’t think you’d get a refund for the hotel night since, bizarrely, you didn’t need to shell out for a new hotel. It doesn’t hurt to ask though.

I think if you had refused to travel overnight, you might have a better chance of having a hotel paid.

I don’t know about the taxi. If it was ‘necessary’ to complete your journey, then maybe.

You are not obliged to travel through the night if your plan was to arrive the same day. SNCF was obliged to offer accommodation, and organise replacement tickets to your destination the next day.

It's difficult to assess a case without details of the planned journey and the real journey (the exact trains, why/where was a taxi needed because that suggests you were in fact stranded, etc.).

However, you are normally entitled to:

  • Compensation for delay on the pass: €24 per pass for delays from 2 hours.
  • Reimbursement of any additional costs to get to your destination (except taxis), see link above.
  • Compensation for delay on the reservations (on all of them for this journey): 50% for delays from 2 hours; claim from the place where you booked.

A refund of the unused reservations is also possible instead of the last point.

Many thanks for helping me understand the system. I'll try that and get back with results here

There’s a thread here where you can post experience of delays. It’s always interesting to see how things are handled by different train companies.
