Do you take a night train from Venice to Vienna? You could arrive earlier in Vienna if you change in the morning but you would need two travel days. If you stay in the night train until Vienna you need only one travel day.
I’ve just do a testing: I chose a starting point Amsterdam, next stop Brussels, and the planning tool showed 2 travel days. Even I only chose one point, say Amsterdam, and no a next stop, it showed 1 travel day. I don’t understand.
It's a bug as the website adds automatically a travel day to get back to your starting point. Disregard it.

On a travel day you can travel with as many trains as you like. A travel day is from 00.00 to 23.59 CET. So you just calculate on how many different days that you will board at least one train and then you know how many travel days you need.
