How do I get from Paris to Rome without taking 23 hours? Do I have to book nearer the time?  All the given routes take a full day - 23 plus hours

The direct line between Paris-Milan reopens on 1 April. As long as you’re looking after that date, you can do it in a (long ish) day. See here Option 2

if you don’t see those trains, you’re looking too far in the future, or you’re looking before April.

You can also take the TGV to Turin, then a sleeper to Rome. Slower than the above route, but more time efficient.

Even without the direct line it is nowhere near 23 hours. For example parting at 9:25 from Paris Est, you‘d be in Rome at 20:39 (via Strasbourg-Basel-Milano).
I looked in SBB app.

No problem to travel Paris - Rome during a day.

Thank you for your replies.  The seat61.com suggestion was exactly what I was looking for so thanks for that.
