I would start with the words

Traveling with a pet is a own world.
Depending on the Company that operate a Train there are different Rules. The Standard rule small pets carried in a normal sized transport box are recognised as “luggage” and most of the times free of charge.

For bigger pets it´s start to be complicated. From a own Dog ticket for the Route (price of Child but issued as DOG Ticket) up to a Daypass for the whole Country (eg. Switzerland) you have so many ways and rules.

Because of that i recommend to plan your Route(My preference is the Website of Bahn.de or their App DB Navigator) and have a look on the train details and see which company operate the train. If you found out witch company it is check on their own website the rules regarding pets.

In the last three years (interrail) traveled with our working Spaniel through Europe and in most cases you have to use the local train company app or you visit the station to book your dog ticket :

  • Belgium -  (Dog ticket)- dog can be anywhere on the train
  • Netherlands -(Dog Ticket) - dog can be anywhere on the train
  • Germany - Child ticket - dog can be anywhere on the train
  • France - Depends  - dog can be anywhere on the train
  • Switzerland - Dog ticket - dog can be anywhere on the train
  • Poland -  Child Ticket -  dog can be anywhere on the train
  • Luxembourg - Free - dog can be anywhere on the train
  • Denmark - Child Ticket  - dog has to sit with you in specific area (near Cycle Area)
There will be a sign on the door. Best to reserve a seat
  • Sweden - Free (Dog ticket  under 40 cm height) -
Dog has to sit with you in specific area (near Cycle Area)
There will be a sign on the door. Best to reserve a seat
  • Norway - Free (Dog ticket  under 40 cm height) -
Dog has to sit with you in specific area (near Cycle Area)
There will be a sign on the door. Best to reserve a seat

In general it is very nice to take your pet backpacking , we normally take her bed/blankets , her bone and bear with us. We put a blanket down between us, we try to reserve seats so we know were we will sit.

In France / Germany / Poland/ Denmark/ Sweden they might ask you to put a muzzle on , although we have not done this in our 3 years of traveling.

Don’t forget to register your dog when you want to go to Sweden.

For Norway , your dog will need a worming tablet which has to be taken 24hr -120hr beforehand and has to be registered by a Vet in the Passport or Animal Health Certificate. In our case we got that done in Denmark.
