Sofia to Craiova, worried about connections

Hi all!

In the beginning of June i'm planning to travel from Sofia to Craiova. However, i am a bit worried about switching trains in between. The whole trip will look like this:

7:15 Sofia Sever → 8:47 Mezdra

18 min transfer time

9:05 mezdra → 12:20 Vidin

40 min transfer time

13:00 vidin → 16:13 Craiova

i am a bit concerned that the time in between trains will be too short. I have no experience with Bulgarian trains so no idea about their punctuality. Is this something to be worried about or should i be fine?

Also, how exactly does it work with making reservations? From what i read i should make train reservations at a ticket office. So for example, could i go to the ticket office in Sofia the day before the trip and make a reservation for all 3 trains? Or do i have to do this at the departing station?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I’m just back from Bulgaria and from what I saw, those times should be OK.  Everything was on time when I was there and the changes like the one at Mezdra are planned as connections with multiple people changing.  They don’t just meet at that time by chance.

Note that Sofia Sever is sort of in the middle of nowhere in particular/not in the centre.  There’s a shuttle train that runs from the main station in Sofia to Sofia Sever.  Unless there’s something about the early start, you should find there is a connecting train from the main station.  The advantage here is that it’s well linked by tram, bus and metro . . . whereas Sofia Sever really isn’t.

The line up to Mezdra is really spectacular as it winds up through the mountains/river valleys.
