Trains Between Italy, Switzerland, and Croatia

Hi there! My husband and I are planning a trip this April-May to visit Italy, Switzerland, and Croatia.

We are a little confused about...

  1. How far in advance we should buy train tickets. Friends/family have said you can buy the day of or day before and don’t have any issues with not being able to get on a train. Is this true?
  2. Traveling from Venice to Interlaken. When we go through the purchase ticket flow, we are prompted to buy a Eurail Pass and they are SUPER expensive. Can you not just buy one-off tickets? Do we have to buy a pass?
  3. Buying tickets from one country to another. Is this a more complicated process?

Thanks for your help!

We'd need to see a more detailed itinerary fior specific advice, but generally in those countries, capacity is good. You can usually but tickets on the day without a problem. It's cheaper in ace of course. A common exception is maybe the connection from Split to Zagreb, which cab get booked up.

I'm not sure s what you mean about trying to buy tickets and being prompted to buy a pass. Where are you searching?

Unfortunately there is no single best website to buy tickets. But Seat61 is the best place to find out.

I suggest you read this page about tickets: https://www.seat61.com/european-train-tickets-online.htm

This page about the Eurail pass https://www.seat61.com/how-to-use-a-eurail-pass.htm

And the country pages eg Italy https://www.seat61.com/train-travel-in-italy.htm

For Venice to Interlaken, for example, I'd first buy a ticket to Milan on Italiarail.com, or on Italotreno.com (Italo is a competitor to Trenitalia).

Then a ticket from Milan to Interlaken on SBB.ch or raileurope.com
