Upgrading on a sleeper

Hi there. I am a newbie to Interrailing but hoping someone can help. I have a 2nd class Interrail pass for my family and I to travel around Spain this summer. We are wanting to take the sleeper train from Paris down to Barcelona. I am keen to upgrade from a 2nd class to a 1st class sleeper as we are 4 - and with young kids I don’t want to share a cabin with 2 strangers and I’m sure nobody wants to share with us either! Is there a way to upgrade just 1 journey for the sleeper train. I’m happy to pay the extra - I just don’t know if it is even possible with the Interrail pass. Thanks!

You can’t book 4-berths in France with a second class pass, unfortunately.

You absolutely can, but you need a reservation with an upgrade included. You can book those on raileurope.com and https://www.b-europe.com/EN/Booking/Pass if you add a 2nd class pass.

You can exchange your passes for first class, or save a travel day and buy cash tickets instead - depending on the price of course. Prices on https://www.sncf-connect.com

Hi @Ali Clark great to read your post about this as trying to do the same - did you manage to get a 1st class couchette booked?

There are multiple possible reason why a reservation can fail. If it doesn't work for you, please mention route, date and departure time.

It’s the Toulouse to Paris sleeper train on 30th Aug, and I’ve checked SNCF and there are spaces. It’s been possible to book a 1st class couchette on Rail Europe’s site, but wasn’t on Interrail’s (with our 2nd class passes), so before I confirm and pay for the reservations I just want to make sure it’s going to be ok, as I don’t want us to be turned away from the train or something similarly terrible!

@Becsmmm yes I did! I followed the instructions and went to raileurope and got a 4 sleeper berth booked 1st class with a 2nd class interrail pass! It was pretty easy to do but raileurope was the only one I could make work. Good luck!

Oh great news! So have you travelled yet with this reservation?

I’d found it on RailEurope too, but was just nervous to book it as so many posts said you can’t travel in 1st with a 2nd class rail pass. But perhaps Rail Europe automatically add in the additional reservation fee to make it possible?

SNCF have a specific 1st class reservation with an upgrade from 2nd included. Available online on raileurope.com and B-europe.

Opinions in other posts don't matter. Many people don't know such details.
