We're looking at getting a 2 month continuous global pass. If we set an activation date (1month from purchase date) and make reservations, can we cancel the reservations before the first travel day, cancel the activation, and get the 85% refund? There is a post-Covid passport processing backlog in my country. Therefore we are not 100% sure not the travel dates in the first few weeks, but would like to book our reservations soon.
You don’t need to activate the pass to make the reservations.
When you choose the start day of the validity of the pass, the first day of the validity period is automatically made a travel day, even if you don't enter a journey, the advice is therefore not to activate the pass before the first travel day as you only can deactivate the pass before 00.00 on the day the validity starts.
The advice from the experienced travellers in the community is to use other ways to make reservations than the Interrail/Eurail website. You can look at the guide in the link:
https://community.eurail.com/train-connections-reservations-47/how-to-get-reservations-105
If you, after having looked at the guide, have questions about how to make specific reservation, please give your travel details (departure date, time and route) preferably in a new post, and you will get advice.
For REServations-some indeed are advised to do weeks ahead-as it seems each&every one wants to use those routes (notably also €* to GB)-but refunds are often scarce or non-existent-you may perhaps change them for other date. Seat-only (mostly around 5-6€) are never refunded-that will be money lost.
