The train from Mostar to Sarajevo has been my favourite as it felt more meaningful than just a scenic journey. After learning so much in the museums in Mostar about Bosnia’s past, especially the impact of the Bosnian War. The views were beautiful, but knowing the history behind the places you were passing through made it feel more reflective.

I’d love to explore more of Spain, particularly in Andalucia - the route from Sevilla to Cordoba. Alternatively checking out the Carpathian mountains in Romania! Bucharest to Brasov and surrounding areas.

My next trip is a long train journey from France to Narvik.

It’s quite a long ride, but I like the idea of slowly moving through the landscapes instead of rushing.

Once I get there, I’ll continue by bike. The plan is to head down to Senja island, then go through the Lofoten islands, and finally continue towards Trondheim.

It’s a mix of train and cycling, taking the time to enjoy places, stop whenever I feel like it, and really experience the journey..

Oh I wanna repeat the Northernmost to Southernmost challenge with public transit (see YouTube creators such as Joe Kibble)!!! And then hang for some time on Spain's northern shore.

I think my favourite slow train journey will always be the Bergen–Oslo route.

The scenery is breathtaking in both summer and winter, and Norway is simply stunning! In fact, I’m going back there this year.

Hi all, my favorite route is Cluj-Napoca to Bucharest, getting to experience the sunrise in the valleys of Brasov, surrounded by mist and the crisp morning mountain air.

A bit crazy but I would love to travel from Bordeaux to northern Finland, through North Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

I really loved the journey from Inverness to Edinburgh, you can see breathtaking views of Scotland in just a few hours.

But the best experience was traveling by trein in Montenegro.

The best train journey I’ve ever been on is one I’ve been lucky to experience a number of times—the MOB route in Switzerland between Montreux and Zweisimmen. The trains themselves are a treat, particularly if you’re lucky enough to catch one of the Belle Époque railcars with wood paneling and little lamps at the tables. The standard railcars are also quite nice and feature large windows which you’ll surely appreciate as you’re traveling through some of Europe’s best scenery along a train line.

If you start in Zweisimmen, you’re beginning your journey in the picturesque Berner Oberland, with its endless pastures at the base of grand mountain peaks. Climbing up from the station toward Gstaad, you’ll be enjoying views of this mountainous terrain in no time. I might add that this is a treat all year-round—snowy winter is of course gorgeous, but summers are very green and idyllic. And not surprising to anyone familiar with Switzerland, you’re likely to see a fair number of cows along the way if there isn’t snow on the ground. After a few hours of the picture-perfect Swiss countryside, you begin your descent toward Montreux. From this point on the route you have an incredible view of Lake Geneva and the mountains behind it; taking the journey in the opposite direction is just as nice, as the sunny and relaxed lakeside vibes of Montreux quickly transform into the majestic mountains of Vaud.

In general, Switzerland is very Interrail-friendly, so this journey is doable without any additional fees or reservations (unless you want to sit in a premium carriage of course).

A close second would be the now-extinct train-ferry crossing between Hamburg and Copenhagen, which was a very memorable experience. I appreciate the speed of the current route, and I think work is being done to improve it further, but the charm of getting out of the railcar inside the ferry, riding on deck for the short boat journey, and then getting back into the train while still on board the ferry was certainly quite unique!

I One of the prettiest train routes for me is Nizza-Marseille, so many stunning views of the French Riviera.

My favourite train ride is probably from Dresden to Prague along the Elbe river. Incredible scenery and two beautiful cities connected by a beautiful train (though they are discontinuing the on-board restaurant, which was THE BEST and MOST BEAUTIFUL [I will never forgive them]).

I also really enjoyed the slow train from Triest to Rijeka. Got that raw Interrail feel idk why.

I really want to explore more train routes in Eastern Europe. From the Balkan countries through Poland up into the Baltic countries. So many beautiful places and railway routes that I really regret not having visited yet.

Next month I’m off to Switzerland and always enjoy my train trip from Zurich airport to Interlaken West. The scenery gets better either way every mile travelled and I know I’m getting closer to my good friends who own the hotel I stop in year after year.

I love the train from Kiel (Germany) to Lübeck (Germany). You travel through beautiful places like Plön (Germany) and many lakes. Its such a typical but still outstanding route through Schleswig-Holstein.

My next journey will be to Spain. I'd love to visit Barcelona, Madrid and Andalucia. I like the sun and want to see something else of Spain except Mallorca.

Greetings from Hamburg (Germany)!

My favorite train route is actually the result of a mistake. I was supposed to travel from Milano to Firenze, but I accidentally boarded a train to Venezia.

I didn’t realize it until a woman nearby asked someone if she was on the right train to Venezia. A third passenger confirmed it, and that’s when I understood I was heading in the completely wrong direction. The train had already left, so getting off wasn’t an option.

I decided to stay on the train to Venezia, and that “wrong” train turned into the best trip of my life. I got to know the woman who asked the question, and eventually she became my wife. So in the end, I guess I had boarded the right train after all.

Although not usually slow, my favorite "slow" train journey was back in 2021. Traveling through Europe with my friends during Covid meant delays, longer routes and a lot of uncertainty. But that's exactly what made it such an adventure.

It was our first backpacking trip together. Just the four of us, all 21 at the time, staying in hostels and meeting people from all over the world. For me, it was the start of many more backpacking trips to come.

Trains took longer than planned, connections were missed and sometimes we had no idea what the next stop would be like. But the slower pace gave us more time to enjoy the journey: the views, the conversations and playing games together.

Maybe it was a bit crazy to go on an adventure during such an uncertain time, but it was completely worth it. We made memories, met people from everywhere and experienced a kind of freedom that's hard to describe. But impossible to forget! :)

My favourite Interrail journey was the night train from Syracuse to Naples. Waking up in the morning and seeing the train run right along the coastline was absolutely breathtaking – easily the most beautiful train ride I’ve ever experienced. :)

The train I took from Copenhagen to rural Denmark with my boyfriend on our first holiday together. Not the most exiting or far-reaching journey, but it is a very fond memory. I would love the chance to do some more traveling together soon.

I’ve just been travelling in Vietnam and experienced the famous train route often called one of the world’s most beautiful journeys by Lonely Planet, my new favorite route!! I stopped in different towns along the way, met lovely people, and watched the landscape constantly change outside the window with dramatic coastlines, lush mountains, rice fields and places I never would have seen from a plane, slow travel at its finest!!! 🌺🪷🐉🦜

You don’t just arrive somewhere you get to experience everything in between. An Interrail pass would be the perfect way to create that same feeling across Europe next. I would love to see Eastern Europe especially by train and experience and meet different culture than Denmark where I am from 🍀
