My favourite slow travel train routes have to be from Faro to Porto along the Portuguese coast, and from Munich through Florence and Genoa, ending back in the Netherlands via Frankfurt. Watching landscapes slowly change, from beaches to mountains to cities, makes the journey just as special as the destination :).

We’re celebrating the release of Platform Europe, the latest book written by our longtime friend Bart Giepmans. Bart is an author, travel journalist, photographer and a passionate advocate for exploring Europe by train.

He is a true champion of slow travel and spends much of the year discovering Europe by rail, embracing historic stations, meaningful encounters and the stories found along the tracks. He wrote and photographed most of the journeys featured in Platform Europe!

😍Win a copy of Bart’s beautiful book AND a FREE Interrail Global Pass (7 days in 1 month)!

I would love to travel the Balkan. I have never been there and all my friends and family told me to try the region one day. Big dream of mine is to be in a small village in the woods there.

My favorite route is old Gotthard panorama line from Erstfeld to Bellinzona. It is full of stunning views.

Next on my wishlist is Stockholm to Narvik route.

Next on my wishlist: Italy by train from north to south, stopping everywhere to have some of the best food in Europe and then take the night train back from the south 😍🇮🇹

Two of my favourite regional journeys are the Schwarzwaldbahn (Black Forest Railway) and the Linke Rheinstrecke (West Rhine Railway). The views are amazing, castles and small villages along the way, absolutely worth it!

For a longer route...I would have to go with the Frankfurt to Milan direct Eurocity. Three countries in 7 hours, plains, mountains, rivers, lakes, it’s just stunning! Absolutely recommend it!

Starting from Amsterdam and passing through Heidelberg and Munich, visiting Salzburg was lovely. Watching the scenery from the train from Hallstatt to Vienna was wonderful. We opted for the overnight train from Vienna to Bucharest. Our trip was tiring but also very enjoyable. I especially hope my next destination will be Rome, as I'm very curious about its historical atmosphere.

My favorite journey is the train route from Berlin to Amsterdam. As the city fades away, it is replaced by the beautiful Dutch countryside, where life seems to slow down. I spent the hours mesmerized by a landscape of endless green pastures, dotted with historic windmills and quiet farms where sheep and cows graze peacefully. It was such a scenic escape that left me daydreaming about a simpler life in one of those very farmhouses one day.

En av mina favoritdestinationer är Vico Vicence i södra italien. En fantastisk tågtesa via bl a Florens och Rom.

My favourite Journey was riding the train from Stockholm in Winter to Kiruna. there was a lot of snow along the way. At night we had the chance to see the Aurora in the sky. In the Morning we enjoyed the sunrise, the sky was yellow orange and you could see the snow everywhere. That was great.

So far I’ve explored two destinations far in the north by train, Norway’s Bodo and Kiruna in Sweden. The slow trip from Switzerland to Kiruna, entirely by trains, was one of the highlights of this vacation. I love watching the landscape change as the trains pass into the Arctic circle, or sleeping and waking up in the snow.

I love travelling by trains but I've only really done it once with an American friend of mine on a lil trip through Bavaria and Austria. I'd love to do something similar again one time maybe a longer and slower trip. I want to see everything but my first pick would be to travel through Norway and Sweden in the summer. I love the nature of those countries and I want to feel like I'm in an Astrid Lindgren story

Oh I absolutely loved taking the train through Sweden in general, but on my wishlsit is definitely the french côte d’azur I heard it’s beautiful🥰

I loved Croatia to Ales in France - in the summer with the smell of Lavender being harvested. Each section of the train journey is so beautiful and the terrain changes dramatically.

Gliding through the snowy mountain ranges of Bulgaria has to be one of my favourite train-experiences. I was coming from Budapest on my way to Istanbul. The orange sunrise woke me up. I would love to go back to Bulgaria next summer :))

My favourite journey by far was the overnight train from Uppsala to Narvik. During the trip, I was able to both admire the stunning natural scenery and chat non-stop with my fellow passengers, without smartphones to distract or isolate us (as there was no internet connection in our compartment) – something that can no longer be taken for granted. I hope to be able to repeat this wonderful experience in the future.

My favourite journey was between München and Verona through the Brenner pass, this was in June so everything was so green and lush! Its was such a beautiful landscape. I felt like a child again, it was magical!

I fell in love with the slow route from Marseille to Paris. While everyone else opted for the high-speed TGV, I took the meandering TER. There’s something magical about winding through the French countryside at a human pace, watching the landscapes shift from Mediterranean coastlines to sleepy pastoral villages.

Travelling from Figures to Lyon we passed , dreamlike through the flats of the Carmargue and out of the right window totally unprepared I spotted a large group of flamingos as my partner who was peering from the left spotted the famous horses. An unexpected bonus .

My favorite journey is from Belgium to Denmark, the beautiful nature in Belgium between Liège and Aachen, where the train follows the river and later on the spiral track between Germany and Denmark where the track loop over itself once where the train climbs for a very high bridge.

Love the journey between Kiruna and Budapest! It’s a long journey with cosy sleeper trains and you can follow how nature changes around you as you get closer to the Arctic Circle
