My favourite train journey is the overnight train from Milan to Vienna; in just one night, it takes you a long way through the heart of Europe, ready to embark on a wonderful journey.

Thank you for coming up with this idea

My favourite was Bratislava to Vienna because it was my first time travelling in a foreign train

Would have to be in Poland, from Gdańsk all the was to Hel. It has everything, mountains, landscape, coast line, nature reserves and sea. The opportunity to discover history of the region form the perfect vantage point of the train.

My favourite train route is the Montreux-Zweisimmen on the GoldenPass Bell Èpoque! It was stunning to be on this ancient train during winter, surrounded by snow… it was the most peaceful trip ever.

The Bernina Express in Switzerland is next on my list! It's the ultimate slow travel experience: just sitting back, relaxing, and watching the incredible Alps and glaciers roll by!

On my first interrail journey I traveled in an older train from Budapest to Ljubljana. Sticking my head out the window, feeling the wind in my hair, enjoying the beautiful green mountains, I felt like this route perfectly summarized the feeling of freedom I got to cherish on my entire trip.

I loved the journey from Munich to Bolzano. I had never seen so clear water and so mountainous mountains before. Spectacular!! It was also my first train ride abroad, so that might have affected my opinion a bit...

My favourite route until now was the interrail trip I did last year to cassis → nice → cinque terre! I loved the beautiful landscape and the way of travelling by train:) meeting new people along the way was amazing and I hope I can go on another trip to Spain and France to discover new places, meet new people and experience new adventures!

lots of love Noa

Oulu to Rovaniemi (Finland): The journey becomes increasingly remote, with wide rivers, marshland, and that stark, open Lapland feel. In winter, you get snow-laden forests and a real chance of seeing the northern lights if you take an overnight train. In summer, the midnight sun creates a surreal, continuous golden-hour effect.

My favourite slow travelling route was the French night train to Latour de Carol - waking up with a view of the Pyrenees was fantastic. In the future I would love to go to more eastern countries like Serbia, Montenegro or Romania :D

Europe by train is hard to reduce to a single “favourite” — the range and diversity is exactly what makes it so compelling.

For mountains, the routes of the Rhätische Bahn are hard to beat: crossing the Albula Pass feels like engineered poetry, the Centovalli line between Ticino and Italy is lush and intimate, and the GoldenPass route from Interlaken to Montreux combines lakes, alpine scenery and classic Swiss panoramas. And while not strictly Interrail, rides like the Gornergrat Railway add that final dramatic ascent into high alpine terrain.

For a completely different sensory experience: the train over the Hindenburgdamm to Sylt. Watching the sea stretch out on both sides while the train cuts through the Wadden Sea has a very distinct atmosphere — almost meditative.

As an urban contrast, I love longer intercity rides linking major capitals — for example Berlin to Paris — where you can literally feel the cultural transition happen over a few hours, from language to architecture to rhythm of life. Or crossing from Europe to UK under the Channel. Maybe not slow, but very enjoyable nontheless.

And for pure scenic “flow”, routes along rivers like the Middle Rhine Valley offer a different kind of slow travel: castles, vineyards and small towns passing by almost continuously.

To summarise it: the real highlight isn’t one route — it’s the diversity. In Europe, you can go from high alpine passes to open sea, from quiet valleys to dense metropolitan corridors, all within a single trip. That’s why I keep coming back to train travel (in Europe).

My favourite journey is from Zurich to Milan. The start of the journey through the alpine forests through Zug and then the scenery explodes with the majestic Alps as you wind between the peaks and enjoy the valley settlements and onto the lakes of Northern Italy through Bellinzona , Lugano and Como as the accents of passengers joining turns more Italian and the final stretch into beautiful architecture of Milan . A great 4 hour rail trip and a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

I am Greek and I live in the Netherlands so we have chosen few times to travel by train to Greece through Italy and the opposite, to come to the Netherlands from Greece through Italy.  The trip through Switzerland and the big train tounel is my favorite...the landscapes there (before and after the tounel)are breathing! Some times to use back to back trains can be a bit anxious but its part of the adventure...I always feel 20y when I am traveling by train!

I loved Myrdal to Bergen, but - which we sadly missed - the Golden Rail between Dombås and Åndalsnes looks equally stunning and I would love to do that one as well!

My #1 Wishlist Pick: The "Lovćen" Night Train

Route: Belgrade (Serbia) to Bar (Montenegro)

The Vibe: Authentic, rugged, and unapologetically slow.

While Western Europe builds sleek high-speed lines, this route remains one of the last bastions of "old school" rail travel. It takes roughly 11 to 12 hours to cover about 475 kilometers, but every minute is earned.

Why it’s on my 2026 Wishlist:

• Engineering Marvels: You cross the Mala Rijeka Viaduct, which was once the highest railway bridge in the world. Peering out the window from 200 meters up feels more like flying than taking a train.

• The Transition: You fall asleep in the gritty, soulful atmosphere of Belgrade and wake up as the train snakes through the limestone canyons of Montenegro. By the time you reach Bar, you can smell the Adriatic salt in the air.

• Brutal Beauty: With 254 tunnels and 435 bridges, the rhythm of the train "clacking" through the dark mountain passes is a form of meditation.

It’s hard to choose a single journey for me because each and every time the charme was so different.

I’ve read Oslo-Bergen and Stockholm-Narvik already with their unreal winter landscapes. Adding of course the Flamsbana! And maybe just for me Oslo-Kristiansand since I’ve met such inspirational people on this route.

Going to the south there is the EC 342 from Budapest to Vienna with very nice and quiet compartments and a legendary bistro. The train from Bucharest via Ruse and Varna to Istanbul with views you would not expect anywhere in Europe. In the West the cozy regional ride from Badajoz to Entrecamento which runs through amazing purple fields.

And last there is the Intercity Notte from Roma to Syracuse, where the whole train is being put on a ferry making you question what’s possible...
