With my wife I travel extensively across Europe and always enjoy the train travel with our Eurail Pass,It is difficult to state our favourite rail journey, but one in particular stands out, it is the UNESCO World Heritage Rail Line the “Bernina Bahn”  which I have travelled on 5 times in the last decade. To me it is absolutely beautiful in all seasons and weather. It may be a bit slow but you can sit back and take in the magnificent scenery along the way down to Tirano across the border from Switzerland in Italy.

The next train journey on my wishlist is the route to see the Northern lights!! 🤩🤩🤩

When I was younger, my big plan was to explore the Benelux countries by train, hopping between Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, discovering cities, canals and cultures at my own pace. For different reasons, that trip never happened, but the idea has stayed with me ever since.

Now, years later, I finally have the chance to make it real and even better, to share it. This summer, we’re planning to travel that same route as a family, with my husband and our two kids (8 and 12). It feels special to revisit that old dream and turn it into a new adventure together.

Travelling by train across Europe has always meant freedom, discovery and connection to me and I’d love to pass that feeling on to my children while exploring Benelux at last.

One of my favorite train journeys was three years ago when I decided to travel from Mostar to Sarajevo. It was early in the morning, I just met some people in my hostel who also went to Sarajevo, and we decided to travel together. Arriving at Mostar station the train was a bit delayed, but I was glad it was still going. The journey was so pretty!! And my new comrades and me just chatted the whole way. We shared all our snacks as breakfast (it wasn’t a lot). When we finally arrived in Sarajevo, we were so hungry we decided to grab a pizza nearby the station. Until this day it’s one of the best pizza’s I’ve ever had!!

Sometime in country and places that are not especially known or considered as wonderful regions, you can find unexpected wonders. This is the case in my own country : Belgium. Belgians themselves generally don’t know a lot of beautiful and naturfull places in their own country, so if I could share little pépites I could talk you about the pleasure to observe from the window of a train the routes between Liege and Luxembourg, Namur and Arlon, Charleroi and Couvin, Liege and Welkenraad… rivers, hills, full nature sometimes dotted with old ruined industries… a true delight

I’d say my favourite journey is the first few miles of track into France after leaving the Channel Tunnel! It’s always the start of an exciting journey!

I really love the swedish night train from Stockholm to Kiruna in the north. You usually wake up with an amazing sunrise, in the middle of saplings and snow

La Tour de Carol - Paris on a night train. Starting the journey crossing the Pyrenees and waking up in the morning in the center of one of the most important European cities.

My favourite journey so far has been the West Highland Line from Glasgow to Mallaig. It’s a great way to see Scotland if you are just travelling by train and there are many amazing views along the way. If you want to stay in Mallaig before travelling back, you might be able to see a beautiful sunset over the ocean.

A tough choice! Some favourites include the famous Bernina route and nearby but less well-known Arosabahn in Switzerland, the Corona night train from Budapest to Brasov, and the West Highland line in Scotland. Next on my wish list is Bar to Belgrade.

The ride from Munich to Vienna is a sweet memory of mine and a beautiful ride. :)

if I had to choose one slow travel dream, it would be a rail journey from Lisbon to Vienna, crossing the changing rhythms of Europe one track at a time.

I imagine the sun in Portugal with the golden light over the Atlantic, then drifting through Spain’s wide, sunburnt landscapes, pausing for unplanned conversations and late dinners near small stations. Crossing into France, the scenery softens, the pace deepens — vineyards, rivers, and that quiet sense of history passing outside the window. By the time the train reaches Austria, the journey itself has already become the destination.

What draws me most to slow train travel isn’t just the views, but the in-between moments: the strangers who become temporary companions, the stations that feel like time capsules, and the rare feeling that you’re not rushing through Europe. One carriage, one conversation, one landscape at a time.

Myy favourite slow train route is along the cost of France and Italy at the Mediteranian Sea. I would love to travel through Eastern Europe. It would be a great adventure to do that by train.

The night-train Stockholm-Narvik is the best experience I have had: the snowy landscapes are amazing, the train is cosy and you can even see auroras !

My favourite train route has to be from my first Interrail trip when I was 18. As a new traveller, I was amazed by every little thing, but the Alpine routes were especially memorable.

Last summer’s train ride from Istanbul to Sofia was also unforgettable, passing from rural Turkey into the former Eastern Bloc. The multiple passport checks during the night made it an experience that’s hard to forget.

In the future, I would love to experience the Bernina Express scenic route, as well as travel through Italy from south to north and explore Spain’s scenic routes that I’ve only seen in movies.

My favourite journey on my month long trip round Europe was the ride from Lucern to Interlaken in Switzerland . It has everything from enchanting buildings , tourquiose lakes, snow topped mountains, beautiful waterfalls flowing off the mountains and stunning scenery with villages and valleys, a truly beautiful experience. Can’t wait to do it again

My favorite one was from Milano to Trieste with a stop at the Lago di Garda in Desenzano del Garda.

I really enjoyed taking the night train from Stockholm to Berlin and I look forward to experiencing it again. I think that it is so cool that we can sleep on trains and have a very comfortable journey while covering a lot of ground and seeing cool spaces and nature along the way.

From Osaka to Kōyasan on the Nankai Kōya Line, especially aboard the Tenku Train, is my favourite slow travel route. The journey slowly transitions from Osaka’s cityscape into deep mountain forests, with panoramic views along the way. At the end lies Kōyasan, a centuries-old Buddhist temple complex and spiritual retreat.

My favorite route is Paris to Interlaken.
