Is there a direct train to go from Milan to Lucerne?

Best answer by thibcabe

There generally are direct trains but due to the freight train derailment in the Gotthard Tunnel international EC trains all run to/from Zurich.

The easiest way to do this route is to take the hourly RE to Lugano and change there to any train to Arth-Goldau/Lucerne. Don't worry about the 4 min connection in Lugano. Fully reservation-free.

To answer all your other questions use a reliable planner like sbb.ch, bahn.com, SBB app or DB Navigator app.

I see that there are short times between trains from Milan and Lucerne, 22 minutes, 4 minutes…   We will have luggage so how difficult will that be to make those transfers?

If you have enough time, you can add “via Airolo” when you search a timetable to take the old panoramic line. An example, with more time to change in Cadenazzo (check the timetable again before departure):

Normally trains in Switzerland are on time and mostly the stop in vis-a-vis of the other train if possible.

Download the SBB Mobile app, the official app of the swiss railways. They will show you all information you need to change trains without stress.
