So we are new to Eurail, travelling with husband and 3 teenagers. Is it best to all be on one device?

Also how do I start booking?

Stockholm to Oslo, then Oslo to bergen, via Flam. We have 1st class tickets so would love to utilise these. Then Copenhagen to Vojens.

Then onto Berlin. That’s enough for now, just want to get started booking.

So do not activate till day of travel? It’s a 15 day pass. And if passes are on different devices, how do we book together?

Reservation are separate from the pass and are better made through other channels than Eurail. Please read more about that further down.

. My advice is to have the passes on separate devices for several reason. Even if you have planned to always travel together something unexpected might happen so that you have to travel separately. You can't move the pass to another device without help from Customer Support. If the device with all passes is lost or broken you also need help from Customer Support and if you need to continue your travel you need to buy tickets for everyone.

Here is some useful information from the experienced travellers in the Community regarding both planning, reservations and activation of pass and travel days.

 Planning

The rail planner is normally not up to date, as it only is updated once a month, so to be sure of the time table you better check the timetable and availability on the websites of the national railways. The bigger national railways, like DB (Germany) SBB (Switzerland) and ÖBB (Austria) cover several countries.

 Reservations

The advice from the experienced travellers in the community is to use other ways to make reservations than the Interrail/Eurail website.  You can look at the guide in the link:

https://community.eurail.com/train-connections-reservations-47/how-to-get-reservations-105

If you, after having looked at the guide, have questions about how to make specific reservation, please give your travel details (departure date, time and route) preferably in a new topic, and you will get advice.

Please note that Interrail/Eurail charges an extra fee of 2 EUR per person and train in addition to the fee for the seat reservation.

 Activation of pass

During the activation process, when you choose the start day of the validity of the pass, the first day of the validity period is automatically made a travel day, even if you don't enter a journey, the advice is therefore not to activate the pass before the first travel day as you only can deactivate the pass before 00.00 on the day the validity starts. If your travel plans change in the last moment you will loose travel days if you have activated the pass in advance.

It can be wise to make a test and activate the pass with a start date well in the future and then deactivate the pass immediately, just to see that everything works.

 Activation of travel day

The advice from the experienced travellers in the community is also never to activate a travel day, that is connect a journey to your pass and create the ticket (QR code), until just before boarding the train, otherwise you might loose a travel day if your travel plans change in a late stage  You can't delete a travel day in the past. A travel day can only be deleted until 23.59 CET the day before the travel day.

Reservations from Stockholm to Oslo are made at sj.se

For reservations in Norway you call Entur.

There is no real 1st class on Norwegian trains (at least for Vy). You have Komfort or Pluss I think it’s called now. Which mean you have acces to a tea and coffee, slightly better seats and thats it. The reservation cost for the Bergensbanen is as follow:

Seat: 50 NOK*
Pluss: 300 NOK*

Flåmsbana is not included in the pass. But if you buy ordinary tickets, you’re entitled to a discount of 30% as a Interrail/Eurail pass holder.

For reservations in the rest of Europe: all information can be found in this topic. Please read it carefully:

When are you planning to travel? For some countries it might be a bit too early to book, some bookings only open 2-3 months before departure.

Thank you. So if we have each pass on a different device, how do I book and get seating together? The reservations?

If you order all your reservations together, you’ll find your seating in the immediate neighbourhood of each other (unless there’s limited availability, then you might be a bit spread out). Most train have some bays of 4, others just rows of 2. You’ll always be close.

(I updated my previous post with the How to get Reservations topic, please read that. It has all the info you need).

When are you looking to travel?

And how do you enter your pass if not activated? do you get to put eurailas voucher? I looked on SJ site, so do I have to enter eurail or our pass numbers? Sorry, just nervous to muck it up!

We are travelling mid January 2023!

That’s a relic of the era of only paper passes. Mobile passes are a quite recent invention: generate your number here:

Then you’ll find most, if not all trains open for reservation-booking that require a reservation :)

Actually if you just type in E or I + random 6 numbers this will also work on SJ’s website.

So i tried the generated Pass cover number and E with 6 numbers on SJ booking site. Neither worked. Not keen on paying the asking 2463sek! Just couldn’t work out where to put in eurail, sorry

That would be a waste of money, sure you followed the right steps? Search Journey → travellers and then you have to add extra details:

SHould be about 62 SEK a person (adults) to Oslo S in second, 143 SEK per person in 1st.

When you have a 1st class pass, you can travel in Plus (or whatever the operator calls it) and reservations done via Entur are free of charge. You can either call Entur (add +47 for Norway) or book at one of their 5 ticket offices. You can also book Flåmsbana through them.

If you are still confused I would just point out that your Eurail pass is your basic ticket to travel and is supported on trains requiring reservations by your separate reservations - usually just by showing the pdf or paper copy alongside the pass.

As described in previous posts you make your reservations all on the same order and, if required, you only need one pass number per order, but the reservations do not link to specific passes, but often contains the name of the person booking the reservations.
