Tight connection at Hamburg

Hello,

I’m currently planning a trip from Montpellier (France) to Umeå (Sweden).

The thing is that the Rail Planner proposes a 24 minutes connection time in Hamburg Hbf, and it seems like a tight one.

I’ve heard a lot from other travelers that German trains are often late 😅 So I’m a bit afraid, as this is the connection to take our big Euro Night from Hamburg to Stockholm. Can’t miss this one.

So, what do you think? Is it safe?

Thanks a lot! 😄

  1. Never plan with the Rail planner app. bahn.com is much more reliable.
  2. A 20-minute connection into a night train after crossing Germany is a recipe to get stranded. use an earlier connection and plan for at least a 2-hour delay on arrival in Hamburg.

I’ve suffered from the German trains delay or cancellations. So if there’s a train you can’t miss I suggest you to look for other alternatives. I once had to take the Eurostar from Brussels to London and I traveled the day before through Germany I was supposed to arrive at 2pm I ended up arriving around 6pm. In my first stop I had a delay of 2 hours, on the train that was taking me to Brusels they canceled the train and had to look for another route. If i didnt take that last train I would had missed my eurostar the next day. It was summer and I’ve heard the delays gets worse that time of the year.

Also when I was going to Berlin from Switzerland I was supposed to arrived around 3 pm, arrived at 5 or something like that.

Any rough travel date in mind? By leaving Montpellier early you should make the night train from Hamburg in a day (by far the most convenient route to Stockholm!). Of course with sufficient margin in Hamburg.

I usually split the search in multiple bits to get all results: first Montpellier - Strasbourg/Karlsruhe, then Offenburg/Karlsruhe - Hamburg, etc.

If you mention a date we can have a look as well.

Hello!
Thanks for your answers 😄

Bahn.com is indeed much more reliable.

I’ve found an itinerary with 1,5 hour change delay at Hamburg. It’s complicated to find a better one.

I would like to leave Montpellier on Thursday May 29th (or Friday 30th). I need to get the night train from Hamburg to Stockholm that leave at 22:03.

The best itinerary I found for the mment is Montpellier > Lyon, Lyon > Frankfurt, Frankfurt > Hamburg, Hamburg > Stockholm, Stockholm > Umea

I think this should work. You have plenty of time in Lyon and 2 or 3 options to go from Frankfurt to Hamburg that should arrive on time. But if things turn really bad (missing your connecting train in Frankfurt and the next one being late by 30min), you’d still miss your train.

If you want to play it really safe, you should probably travel to Lyon or even Strasbourg the day before and have much better options from there the next day.

I guess you saw the 06:31 TGV from Montpellier? It also continues to Strasbourg so I’d rather change there for Frankfurt: strategic lunch break and always better to advance as much as possible. ;)

Though… it does not appear on SNCF-Connect nor on Rail Europe on 29th May. Could it not run that holiday Thursday? It would be pretty annoying but not uncommon for SNCF.

Next alternative for me would be:

  • TGV Montpellier Sud de France - Paris Gare de Lyon 07:52 - 11:05
  • RER D across Paris
  • Eurostar Paris-Nord - Köln Hbf (Cologne) 11:55 - 15:15
  • ICE Köln Hbf - Hamburg Hbf 16:04 - 19:49
