Need confirmation that the 7 day pass can be used for the following itinerary

Munich → Regensburg

Regensburg → Berlin

Berlin → Prague

Prague → Budapest

Budapest → Paris (flight)

Paris → Frankfurt

Frankfurt → Bamberg

Bamberg → Frankfurt

For our final leg Frankfurt → Paris  we will need to purchase a separate ticket as this will be the 8th travel day

Thank you for your help

I’d suggest you pay for the Munich - Rgensburg leg separately and look at using the pass for Frankfurt - Paris, even with the high reservation fee on the direct trains it will likely be much cheaper than buying regular tickets.

Munich - Regensburg is only possible on regional trains, a Bayern ticket is the best option for this, it is €32 for one person and €10 for each extra person. It’s also valid on local transport on that day.

Well the pass allow you to travel on all this routes, you need to check them on the app or on this site https://www.eurail.com/en/plan-your-trip/eurail-timetable?t=1743825600000&ol=Regensburg+Hbf+%28Germany%29&ov=8026294&dl=Berlin+%28Germany%29&dv=8062648&vl=&vv=&ar=false&tv=1&mct=1  In this one i put your first trip. If 7 days its enough depends on how many days you want to stay on each city. In the case of some, like Paris - Frankfurt you have 2 options, pay for a seat (around 21 euros) to be able to arrive in less than 4 hours or look for an itinerary with no seat require that could take you up to 8 hours with multiple conections.

Thank you for this very clear response. I wil definitely consider purchasing a spearate ticket for Munich →  Regensburg. However should I book it in advance or book the ticket on the day I arrive at Munich station. I know you do not have a crystal ball but in general how easy will it be to get a booking on the day of travel

Regional trains cannot be booked by you or anyone else, you just get a ticket, join the train and take any available seats.

The ticket I suggested can be bought on the day or the day from ticket machines at the station (or ticket office but they charge €2 on top), there is no discount for buying in advance. It is always available and the only restriction is that it is not valid before 9am on weekdays.

You could do similar for Frankfurt - Bamberg, there are fast ICE trains that cover part of the journey but they don’t save much time and the journey can also be done on a direct Regional train and a similar priced ticket is also available for this journey at €38 + 13 for each extra adult, this one is just for the city-city journey though.

That is 3 days you could do without a pass, add a 5 day pass to that for the other longer journeys.

The Bavaria day ticket (Bayern-Ticket) doesn't need to be booked in advance since it has a fixed price. You can buy it online, in the DB app, and at ticket machines.

  1. Munich → Regensburg
  2. Regensburg → Berlin
  3. Berlin → Prague
  4. Prague → Budapest
  5. Budapest → Paris (flight)
  6. Paris → Frankfurt
  7. Frankfurt → Bamberg
  8. Bamberg → Frankfurt

I am repeating our itineray as i think i need some more confirmation whether i really need a Eurail pass for the following reasons

  • We will not be using a train more than once in a day to get fro one city to the next
  • 4 of the travel days above (1, 2 7 and 8) are on regional DE trains for which you advise cannot be booked in advance
  • is a Eurail pass really worth it for the other 3 travel days (3,4 and 6)
  • How can travel by train for days 3,4 and 6 be done with flexibility and not tying us down to a particiular train i.e. without a reservation
  • in your opinion how busy are routes for 3, 4 and 6

Thank you once again for your help

Day 3, Berlin to Prague can be done without reservation it takes around theres one with reservation but not worth it because i see you have many options in case you miss one train (actually I’ve made this route on 2023 and it was ok)

Day 4, I see there’s also a many options for this route, one of the options says that  “seat reservation its not required” but they advice you to get one because its a popular route, which means it could get fully booked and you wouldn’t be able to get in, on the others 2 it also optional but they dont have that advice to reserve the seat.

day 6. Here the main difference its that without reservation it will take you around 9 hours and multiple conections (up to 5) while the options with seat reservation only takes around 4 hours. So if you have the time and energy you can do it without reservations, if not I advice  you to reserve the seat

The first thing is you have left out some details such as how many and the ages of your party which can change the best options.

I suggested the regional tickets for 1, 7, 8 because there is no time penalty for using these and they will be considerably cheaper no matter what.

The slight downside to this is that short duration Eurail passes are more expensive per day, even with that I would still combine the above with a 4 day pass for the other days. You could possibly beat the price of the pass plus reservations by buying the cheapest fixed tickets for these days well in advance but you would lose any flexibility and I doubt the saving would be significant.

While 2 could be done on regional trains it would require multiple connections and take 7-9 hours, There are some direct and many 2 train options using ICE trains taking 4-5 hours that would be much more sensible. Reservations on these are not required but may be a good idea depending on when you travel, how many of you there are.

3 and 4 can be done without reservations but they are generally busy routes and reservations on these are fairly cheap, again circumstances but I’d probably book. 6 needs to be reserved, it is fairly expensive at €19 per person but regular tickets on this route are also expensive.

It’s not that those can’t be reserved in advance, it’s that you don’t need to. The pass is just as valid as a walk-up ticket. What matters is whether a pass is good value for those days.

You just have to look at the various types of pass on offer - 4-day, 5-day or 7-day - and decide which combination of pass and tickets works best for you.
