Do I write down every single journey? Multiple trains on a day is one travel day?

Hello!

I’m planning my trip around Europe and I plan to leave my home country soon. The only thing is that I can’t seem to find an answer to a couple of my questions. I hope you guys can help me!

If I have 3 connecting trains on my trip from Aarhus (DK) - Warszawa (PL), (Aarhus - Hamburg, Hamburg - Berlin, Berlin - Warszawa) the same day, will they count as 1 travel day?

And how do I write it down in my pass? (I would love to see an example) Do I write every single journey and connecting train or just Aarhus - Warszawa?

Do you prefer the mobile pass or the paper pass? (I haven’t bought one yet, but I need to decide soon)

How does it work with one in- and outbound day for your home country? Lets say I buy a 7 day 1 month pass - does the two days I travel to and from home count as 2 out of the 7 days?

All information can be found on the Interrail website. In short:

  1. On a travel day, you can board as many trains as you like.
  2. You need to register each train you use.
  3. People have different opinions about paper or mobile pass. Here's a short comparison.
  4. On 2 of your travel days, you can also travel in your country of residence.

@4: on the paper pass there are 2 separate fields where one has to write the trip OUT and at the end IN again (in fact they do not need to be first/last day, but for most this will apply)-these are NOT extra, but must be done on chosen traveldays.

I have used 10+ passes through the years and always paper-only 1 time (and that was on DSB)  a conductor instructed me to write every single train trip o a new line-which I never do (I would easily have written your first day in 1 line)-and he came back later to check if I was obedient.

IN the past paper passes should be sent back so that INterRail could check where people use trains-vs where they pay for passes, but this is no more since the mobile pass does it automatic.

If you want a paper pass you should be able to buy that on a larger railway station in Denmark. The delivery time for a paper pass from Interrail is many weeks.

Here is some useful information from the experienced travellers in the Community regarding both planning, reservations and activation of pass and travel days (for mobile passes). 

 

Planning

The rail planner is normally not up to date, as it only is updated once a month, so to be sure of the time table you better check the timetable and availability on the websites of the national railways. The bigger national railways, like DB (Germany) SBB (Switzerland) and ÖBB (Austria) cover several countries. 

 

Reservations 

The advice from the experienced travellers in the community is to use other ways to make reservations than the Interrail/Eurail website.  You can look at the guide in the link:

If you, after having looked at the guide, have questions about how to make specific reservation, please give your travel details (departure date, time and route) preferably in a new topic, and you will get advice.

Please note that Interrail/Eurail charges an extra fee of 2 EUR per person and ticket in addition to the fee for the seat reservation.

 

Activation of pass

During the activation process, when you choose the start day of the validity of the pass, the first day of the validity period is automatically made a travel day, even if you don't enter a journey, the advice is therefore not to activate the pass before the first travel day as you only can deactivate the pass before 00.00 on the day the validity starts. If your travel plans change in the last moment you will loose travel days if you have activated the pass in advance.

It can be wise to make a test and activate the pass with a start date well in the future and then deactivate the pass immediately, just to see that everything works.

 

 Activation of travel day

The advice from the experienced travellers in the community is also never to activate a travel day, that is connect a journey to your pass, until just before boarding the train, otherwise you might loose a travel day if your travel plans change in a late stage  You can't delete a travel day in the past. A travel day can only be deleted until 23.59 CET the day before the travel day.
