I have a question regarding OBB’s nightjet.

Is it covered by interrail pass?

Best answer by rvdborgt

Yes it is. Book via tickets.oebb.at. Do NOT use the "Seat reservation only” option but add the Interrail/Eurail discount and then look for normal tickets.

When doing this, there is only an option for “Global Pass”. Do you know if reservations bought like this can also be used with a one country pass if the trip is only within that country? For example a Germany pass to go from Basel to Hamburg.

Yes, that is possible. Just use "global pass"  as option.

But only for trips in the country where the pass is valid. For international trips you have to buy in that case the reservation + ticket in the country where the pass is noz valid at a ticket counter.

Plesse mention route, date and departure time. Also what kind of private cabin do you mean? The new minicabins, a sleeper compartment or a couchette compartment?

Trying to book for 5 persons - going from Berlin to Wien in July. Night train with öbb.
its available when not applying the interrail discount. But not there when applied.
is there no way to get private cabin with interrail?

You didn’t answer all my questions but are you by any chance trying to book a private couchette compartment? That does not have a pass price.

Instead, you could book all 6 berths in a 6-person couchette compartment. Do that on tickets.oebb.at, add the Interrail/Eurail discount for all persons and make any child at least 6 years old so every child has their own berth. Don't check "Seat reservations only” and before payment you can check the service details to see the assigned place numbers. If they all start with the same digit (e.g. 41-46), then they're all in the same compartment.

The German rail pass is not valid for Nightjet journeys. This is stated on the page of the German rail pass ("Please note it's not possible to travel on any Nightjet trains.") and on the travel info list in the App.

Yes - a couchette compartment :-)'

Ok - I called the ÖBB today and they comfirmed that you cannot buy this “private couchette” when using the Interrail discount. I asked about the possiability of bouying one extra ticket just to be sure that no one else will come in to the couchette.

I recon i have to alternatives:

  1. Buy 4 persons couchette (in Germany and Austria you do not need seat reservations?) and we sleep tight in 4 beds.
  2. We buy the 5 tickets for the 5 in the travelparty in one couchette and buy 1 more ticket and hope it gets placed in the same and therefore fills the couchette. Only thing about this is that ÖBB also said that when the train conductor/ticket sees that the seat is vacant they will place someone else there?

@Edvard regarding option 1, Reservations on Nightjet are mandatory as is the case on most night trains.

That's what I suggested above, but you have to book all 6 couchettes in the same transaction. On tickets.oebb.at, you can see before payment whether the berths are indeed in the same compartment.

Yes. But do you think the conductor will release the last (6/6) ticket - when he checks and that place is vacant? And what name do i put. Like a made up name?

On tickets.oebb.at, you only have to give one name for the whole booking.

With Nightjet I haven’t experienced any spontaneous bookings in such cases. A few months ago, we had one minicabin left (we didn't cancel and rebook for one person less because that would have been more expensive). We told the attendant that they could reuse it, but they didn't care and didn't reuse it.
