Rome to Frankfurt

I am looking for trains from Rome to Frankfurt with minimal transfers on June 20, 2025 without many transfers. I think I would need a seat reservation because the train starts in Italy, and if so where do I do this, and how would I ensure I get a reservation so I could sit near a friend as well? We both have global Eurail/Interrail passes. Any recommendations for specific trains/routes/times? 1 day travel would be amazing, but I am also open to staying overnight along the way and continuing the next day for a more relaxing journey. Any suggestions for a 1 day route and/or 2 day route for this journey? Thanks for any help and ideas!

Luckily there's a very good route from Rome to Frankfurt with a single change. Timetables for 20th June might not be available yet but it should look roughly as follows:

- Frecciarossa Roma Termini - Milano Centrale 07:20 - 10:35 13€ seat reservation

- EC Milano Centrale - Frankfurt (Main) Hbf 11:10 - 18:44 13€ seat reservation as well

Both trains are very comfortable and even though there isn't much high-speed on the second train, the views will be nice across Switzerland. ;)

Reservations are best bought on Rail Europe: no fees, click on add rail pass. To sit together one person should book for both. On some trains you can select seats for 2€ extra, on others the system will assign them automatically.

If you'd like to stop along the way, I might suggest Zurich or Lucerne. Best to do the longest leg on Day 1.

What app are you using to find those journeys? Rail Europe? I think I would prefer to leave Rome later and stay overnight somewhere in Switzerland to avoid such a long travel day. Also if one person has Interrail pass and other has Eurail, can you still use Rail Europe to book seats together? When I selected “Eurail”, it said something like Eurail passes will be applied to each traveler. But the other traveler has Interrail. Is this a problem?

Rail Europe isn't a good travel planner; just use it for booking reservations. Better planners are e.g. bahn.de or sbb.ch.

Eurail and Interrail result in the same reservation for "Global pass”, so you can choose one of them, it doesn't matter.
