Hi,

we plan to reach the Lofoten in October by Interrail (1st class). I saw there is a possibility to go from trondheim by day train to Bodo. From there with a ferry (Hurtigruten) to Lofoten. On our way back, we want to take the night train from Bodo to Trondheim.

A few questions:

1.) The nighttrain has only two bed compartiments. I think we will manage to “sleep” there with one adult and child on each of the small beds. So we need just one compartiment. Does anybody know if this will be okay with the railway company? Our children are 5 and 2 years old.

2.) How about ferry connection in Bodo? Shall I pre book or would it be better to do it, when I know, if the train is maybe late? Are there other ferry companies Bodo / Lofoten?

3.) How can I find out, how much the night train compartment will cost me with my interrail 1st class ticket? (3 tickets for us two adults and the 5 year old, no ticket for the 2 year old..).

1.) SJ Nord (they operate the night rain Bodø - Trondheim) Website says: “ You are allowed to travel up to two adults and two children under the age of 6 in one sleeping compartment. “

2.) If you want to use the Hurtigruten or Havila (which company is operating depends on the day of travel) cruise ship style ferry I think pre-booking is necessary. I would take the express boat (hurigbåt in Norwegian). Timtable: https://www.reisnordland.no/rutetabeller-hurtigbt .I guess you will get tickets the same day at the ticket office, but online booking on the reisnordland website seems to be usual way to get tickets.

3.) The canonical website for public transportation in Norway is https://entur.no/ . The have also an English speaking customer service, if I remember correctly, option 9 in the menu when you call them.

2.) Depending on where you are going on the Lofoten islands, crossing to Moskenes with the Toghatten ferry may be an option. Free for pedestrians, no reservation needed.
