Routes & destinations

We (retired Canadian couple) are thinking of a train trip leaving Vienna in Mid November and then travelling through Italy to Sicily, 2 weeks in Sicily (Palermo as base or ???) then on to northern Spain and end up in Bucharest for Xmas then back to Vienna for New Year..any thoughts?  Ferry to Palermo from Civitavecchia? then back to Civitavecchia and ferry to Barcelona (advice please.. is it advisable in winter ?) . San Sebastian, Bilbao or ?? in northern Spain (2 weeks so somewhere that’s a good jumping off point) then to somewhere in France (tips please), Turin then Lubljanana and on to Bucharest.  We speak Italian, French,and basic German and Spanish.  Any advice much appreciated. Weather isn’t much of a concern as we live in Newfoundland so anything that isn’t rain drizzle or fog is a bonus.

Heads-up that there are fresh strikes proposed on LNER affecting weekends from 31 August to 14 November. (Weekdays are unaffected, as are other operators.)It’s likely that they will run a reduced service on the core section of the route (London-Edinburgh, and probably London-Leeds). Expect reduced frequency and fewer early morning/ late night services. And the occasional late-notice cancellation.You should also expect no LNER services north of Edinburgh, or to the secondary destinations (Lincoln, Hull, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, anywhere beyond Leeds).All these destinations can be reached on other operators, who are not affected by the strike.It’s a very good idea to make a free seat reservation, and to double-check exact train times on the day of travel in case of changes.LNER strike page: 

Hi allPlanning to be back on the rails for a two week trip around the end of August, so thought I’d see if anyone has any hot tips/suggestions. Family of four.We want to cover Copenhagen and Stockholm, and are thinking of adding Oslo to the mix if it’s worth it. Unfortunately I am not so good in knowing how to go by ferrys. We (family, 2 adults, two children 2, 5) want to go from Munich to the Lofoten, and later on to Great Britain. So our plan is to go on a day train from Munich to Sassnitz or Rostock for a ferry to Sweden. We should arrive there early evening. Which connection would you prefer, from Sassnitz or Rostock for an overnight ferry?(From there, we plan to travel to Stockholm, where we want to take the night train to Narvik, and there with the Bus to the Lofoten. From the Lofoten with a ferry to Bodo, and there with the train to the South.)Next we want to go to Great Britain. I only know two options so far: We go to Brussels and with the Eurostar to London. Or we go to Hook van Holland and from there with a night ferry to England. Is there a third option recommendable? Any hints for the hook van Holland ferry?Thank you very much!

Hello! Does anyone know how to book a train for the Budapest-Kosice trains in September (I’ll travel on September 13th)? I tried doing it at Mav-start’s webpage as well as ZSSK’s but with no success. Are the trains changing schedules or is there any problem with the train line during that month? Thanks!

Hi everyone! From September 14th to 22nd I will be taking my first solo trip. I wanted to know what the weather will be like in Stockholm - Oslo - Copenhagen during the first 4 days.should I use winter clothing or just a sweatshirt and jacket? any tips?

I am going from Tirano on the 20th of June 2023, plan to do Bernia express then join onto the glacier express to the Matterhorn in Zermatt.on the eurorail app I find I can not make it from Tirano to St. Moritaz before the 9am train departs along the glacier route.thus I changed around to Chur and then switching to glacier express but then it still wants to go through Zurich and around instead of going through Andermatt along the actual glacier route. please, how do I travel from Tirano to Zermatt on the same day, arriving by 7pm, via the actual bernia and glacier routes? thankyiu kindly for your assistance 

Hi everybody,My name is Adrian, 22 years old, and I just bought an Interrail pass with 5 travel days in one month. I am really excited! I am planning to go to Barcelona (not back and forth) and would love to explore 4 other cities along the way to make sure I make the most of my trip and use up all my travel days. It has proven to be difficult to map out my itinerary though! Initially I was thinking of visiting the following cities: Groningen (starting place) - Zürich/Vienna - Genua - Nice - Bilbao - Barcelona. To go from Nice to Bilbao is very difficult however and takes more than one day.I am sure I will figure it out and find a nice route to Barcelona eventually, but I would be very interested in some suggestions from the community. Hey guys. Quick question: ive got 2 days left on my interrail pass. Ive gotten home earlier because of a cancelled train. What can I do with these remaining days? I live in the Netherlands. Anybody got any ideas where to go and use for these 2 days? I got until 16 august to use them.

Hi, I am traveling trough Europe and in a week I am going to north macedonia from Sofia by bus. This bus was not included in the interrail pass. Now I am looking to go from north macedonia to Croatia or somewhere near, but online i cant find anything about trein on IC busses that i can use with the interrail pass. Does anyone know what route is the best?

Hi everyone, I want to get from Paris to Siena in August, and back again. Which route would you go? I’ve been looking into various options but because of the landslide etc it all seems a bit complicated, and I’m struggling to find the simplest route. Hi I am Francesco and i would like this summer to make a trip with inter rail and going from Italy to FinlandRome->Geneve->Lyon->Paris->Luxemburg->Bruxelles->Bruges->Amsterdam->Hamburg->Copenaghen->Stokholm->TurkuI will come back by airplane. I have some questions:Rome Geneve: I should take first a train to milan and then a train from geneve, are they both included in the global pass ticket? Did i understand right that i should pay an extra for fast train ? is Stokholm - Turku ferries included? What kind of pass would you suggest for this kind of trip? i was thinking continuos pass 22 days or maybe it is better take the flexible 7 days pass and pay some  trip with normal tickets 

Hi all,I’m thinking of buying a pass in the sale (valid from September onwards) and have plotted out an overland route to the north coast of Greece (Thessalonike/Kavala), after which I had been hoping to cross the Aegean north to south with a couple of stops along the way. But I’ve not been able to find any ferries linking the East Aegean region (Ikaria/Samos) with any of the Dodecanese islands to the south (either very close by like Patmos, or larger islands like Kos).I initially thought Dodekanisos Seaways would plug the gap, but it appears they also stop serving Samos, Fourni and Ikaria after August 31st.Does anyone know of any ferry company (whether covered by the pass or not) that can save me having to go via Piraeus if I travel in September?Many thanks if you can help!

Greetings! So I have seen a lot of Europe already, but for my Big Trip I am looking forward to explore a part of the continent that I am less familiar with. My general plan for now is to travel through Central and Eastern Europe and especially the Western Balkans, starting from June 12 for about two weeks.My general idea for now is to travel from The Netherlands to Prague, Warsaw, Budapest or Vienna first; possibly by taking a night train. I've visited those places (except for Warsaw) before, but I wouldn't mind revisiting for a bit. I also would definitely like to visit Slovenia and I am kinda considering Slovakia too. In terms of Balkans I’m eyeing Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Albania. I'm skipping Croatia because I've already been before (it was amazing btw). Hi, I've been waiting for direct trains to be released for the 20th August from Luxembourg City to Paris but the timetable seems to stop in the next week or so. There are only indirect services available from then on, with many requiring a bus for the first leg. Up until next week it seems that TGV Inoui services operate direct several times per day but then no longer. Does anyone know what is happening please? Thanks

Hiya! Looking for some thoughts/suggestions on my whirlwind itinerary I’m putting together. I’m coming from Canada, I’m volunteering at the Olympic and Paralympics in Paris. I have a little stretch off between that my husband is going to come so we can go on an adventure. I have a 5 day eurail pass. We’re looking to travel Aug 12-17/18Aug 12 - Start in Paris, Leave early - Stop in Brussels for the day and head to Amsterdam in the evening.Aug 12-14 in Amsterdam. Head to Berlin on the 14th morning. Aug 14-16 in Berlin. Head to Munich on the 16th in the morning.Aug 17 - Munich to Bern, then Bern to Paris in the evening. I’m super inexperienced with planning any train trips as Canada is severely lacking, and I’ve never been to Europe. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated! We’re a family of.5 travelling from Milan to Zermatt in August 2024. What’s the best train route we can take for this trip? When I search using Eurail app, the route that comes up is: Milan Centrale → Domodossola (By Bus???); Domodossola → Brig (By Train); Brig Bahnhof → Zermatt (By Train)Is this the best way to do this trip? And is Milan Centrale to Domodossola route can only be done by Bus? Can we use our Global Eurail Pass for the Bus? Appreciate your help and tips on what the best route we can take for this Milan to Zermatt trip. Thank you.

FSE seems to be owned by/just a regional division of Trenitalia and using trenit app or Trenitalia web site the (many) regional trains and stations in Puglia appear (as do a lot of busses!) but these stations and trains don't appear in railplanner app. Does this mean we have to buy tickets for these routes and can't use our eurail passes?
