Travelling by train

HiI am interrailing with my partner for 1 month in March, starting from the UK into France, then around 7 other countries before finishing in Switzerland. We are both triple vaccinated but are very worried about COVID entry requirements and testing. On the government website it says that multiple countries eg France, Italy, Switzerland etc need lateral flow tests prior to entering the country. Is this only from going from the UK directly to that country?Is a test still needed if we have travelled between two countries within the Shengen/EU?Does anyone have any recommendations of places to buy cheap lateral flow tests? Thank you in advance :) 

So I am really tired of the lockdown we have going on in the Netherlands and I want to leave the country for about 7/10 days. Now I’ve been looking online at my options for traveling to italy and visiting some of the cities there and I would love for some opinions on if this is a good idea and if it will work.Italy requires both being fully vaxxed and having a negative pcr test within 48 hours of arriving. My plan right now is to get a test, take the thalys and tgv and go to Turin in a day and then just travel around in italy for a week or so. I would like to know if people are doing the same thing as I am and if it will be a social experience and if it would be a good idea at all during covid. I would love to read any thoughts on this :) Also can you get on a train like the thalys and tgv last minute like this (booking tomorow for the day after tomorow for example) and is it only the 30 euros extra my trip planner says it will be? Hi! I was wondering what the current COVID rules were and where I’d find this information. I want to know what countries are/aren’t okay to visit and where I’d find updated information for this when planning my trip and while travelling, as well as the rules about interrail passes with COVID (refunds, pass extensions etc). I’ve had a look on the ‘Coronavirus information centre’ on the main interrail website but that hasn’t been updated since July 2021. Thanks :) 

Hi to all! At the moment, as having described in the last topic, we are planning a trip through France and Italy together and unfortunately, it is not possible to get coherent seats in some trains.That’s why I’d like to ask those who have already travelled to France and Italy if it is a problem if you choose other than the reserved seats in a train where the reservation is compulsory - assumed the train is not crowded and there are many empty seats. Is it important to take exactly the reserved seat showed in the reservation or is it sufficient to take the train mentioned there? Which purpose follows the reservation in France and Italy - just the one that every traveller gets a seat or also the other one that every traveller is assigned to a special seat? I’ve also read nothing about a fine for travellers just using another seat but the same train. Thanks for your answers!

Hi guys, looking to do a bit of travelling in the coming months all being well. Haven’t got my covid vaccine and won’t have got it by the time I plan on travelling, however I have recently had covid (tested positive 31st December 2021) and recovered since. Would I be able to get into most countries by showing them proof that i have had covid within the last 6 months and following that up with producing a negative test upon entry into that country? Just let me know honestly what my chances are like if you have experience of this or know anyone who have had a similar situation. Appreciate any replies.Many thanks,Joshua.

Due to the ongoing problem of Covid variants, we are still having to postpone our trip.  We purchased first class global Eurail passes Mar 3 2020 just before Covid erupted.  Should we get a refund now, or will there be another extension of the dates for their valid use?

We have train tickets booked on Eurail. For April 2022.  I would like as much information as I can get about travel by train between countries. Is there border patrol and covid tests necessary every time? Is a Canadian vaccine card recognized there? Are tourists welcomed? Any information I can get will be very helpful. I feel like I have lots of questions and when I start typing I forget some so if there’s something we should know I’d be grateful to hear about it!!! 

Hello!I am planning to visit Berlin, Croatia, Italy and France next year. I assume I need a passport for this, but what about passport control? Is it like in airports where they check your stuff at the counter and at the security? I am also going by boat to Croatia, departing from Italy. Does anyone know how and if they will check my passport at the port?

Hey guys, me and my friend vici got two interrail tickets (4 days within a month). We just took the Nighttrain from Narvik to Stockholm yesterday. But the train got four hours late and so we couldn‘t get our trains back to germany.Now we must take a train at 17:18 and will arrive tomorrow in the morning instead of tonight. The problem is, that our tickets won‘t work for the last two stops. Are there any solutions for problems like that?Thank you

It has been many years now that France has limited Eurail/Interail access on TGVs. TGVs require a reservation. Unless you can plan way ahead--which defeats much of the beauty of the Eurail--it is often cheaper to buy tickets online than to use a pass. Not only do you have to get your reservation, too, which increases the cost of each individual trip, but the SNCF limits the number of Eurail-pass-holder seats quite a bit. As a result, I have  been caught more than once holding a pass but having to buy a regular internet ticket when I wanted to take a train 6 or 7 days out (not knowing when I would want to travel in advance).This is exacerbated by the fact that France has, for over 10 years now, poured resources into money-making TGVs at the expense of slower regional trains. Sometimes it is impossible to avoid a TGV or at least extremely difficult to travel by train other than TGV or a night train (which requires also getting a couchette, another expense and you don’t get to s

Curious if anyone is in Germany right now? I'm thinking about going there in mid January and just wanted to know on hand experience about the restrictions. I have read about them. Vaccine and mask. But I'm unsure about the quarantine? If anyone can tell a little about their current experience I'd appreciate it :)

Is the Omicron affecting visitors to get back to the States?  My husband and I were planning on coming to London and Paris in January,  but I think it's best we wait until the summer as the numbers have gotten extremely high and I don't want to risk being stuck abroad for 2 weeks.  What do you think???

So, has these restrictions now caused no travel between the two countries?  So, if I just purchased tickets on yesterday through Eurostar,  I can't get my money back at all? I am a US citizen as I was trying to celebrate my anniversary there.  Am I reading this correctly???  Please help ????  

Anyone travel thru Europe recently? How is the COVID handled with train travel and entrance from one country in to other? we are planning on traveling in May. Regards,Joanna

I wanted to see if anyone has any insight as to the new travel restrictions to enter Paris from London/UK. We are traveling in February 2022 and are US citizens. I am unclear if France is restricting travel to have to be essential travel for everyone entering from the UK or just UK citizens. As a US citizen traveling to France from London will I not be allowed in? 

It’s been on the news that franz is closing its borders to UK travelers. But I just read on France 24 news that they are also banning travel from France into England for nonessential purposes such as travel or family visits.  first of all can anyone confirm that? Second I’m booked with Euro store on Monday but I’m wondering about trying to go Saturday instead. I assume it’ll have to just lose the other reservation fee and book a new train? 

Hello, my wife & I will be traveling next week & I wasn't sure what entry requirements that I see are applicable to train travel. We are taking the train from Germany to Switzerland to Italy. Will travel by train follow all of the same entry requirements as somebody traveling by plane?

I hope this is an appropriate question.  I am a motorcycle rider and hope to travel to Europe in a year or more.  I want to rent a motorcycle.  I have been on some motorcycle forums that seemed to indicate that some European residents had their motorcycle shipped on the same train they traveled on.  Is this possible?  How do I do it? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey everyone! I would like to ask a question regarding my upcoming trip from Stockholm to Zurich. So as for my trip, i saw that i will be passing by Germany and transfer to another train. I was wondering if i need to do a PCR test for Germany or there are exceptions as I’m just transiting. Thanks for your help!

Hi.  My wife and I are planning a trip throughout the EU this Spring.  While I fully understand that things will change between now and then, I am trying to understand the status now with respect to Covid Testing Requirements at the borders. We are fully vaxxed and boosted - I AM NOT WORRIED ABOUT PROOF OF VACCINATION.  What I am wondering is if the trains are the same as planes - where you need to have a negative test result before entering a country.  Is there a similar requirement on the train?

Hi there!I know just now maybe isn’t the best time to be thinking of this with the current border closures/quarantines etc, but does anyone know what it’s been like travelling between countries?I’m from the UK and hoping to go through Poland, Slovakia and Budapest next year at some point. Does anyone have any experience with what it’s been like travelling over the borders in relation to tests, vaccinations etc?  thank you! 

I cannot use my eurail pass due to covid. what are my options

Suppose I am going to Croatia with my 6 friends, what would be the cheapest route that doesn’t take too long? We will start in Brussels, then go to Zagreb and stay there for a few days. Then we will continue our trip to Split. To go back to Belgium we will be going from Split to Brussels in one go. We are all under 26 if thats important for the prices.

The Eurail Planning app says there are half a dozen trains from Annecy France to Geneva Switzerland on Sunday. However, when I check the French Oui-scnf app, it shows no trains Trainline also shows no trains at all. A local fellow says there are no trains or not dependable, and recommends the bus. But the Eurail app still shows these train trips - they are TER (SCNF) trains with numbers and stops listed out.  Can anyone explain what is going on? Is the planning app wrong, or is SCNF wrong? I am not sure if the train office will be open on a Sunday to ask them. 

I was planning my trip on the app, but one trip that I found with the trip planner online does not appear in the app. So I wanted to add it manually, but I was wondering how I should fill it in with a trip that has a transfer. Do I add the different trains individually or just from the beginning city to the last city? Thankyou :)
